Directed by renowned animator Hayao Miyazaki, this anime has broken a number of box office records in its native Japan. Essentially a statement on the ecological devastation brought on by human advanc...( read more

I watched part of it. Wanna finish it. The problem was, it was in Japanese, which I don't understand, subtitled in Chinese, which I can't read that well. So I guess it's more like "start over" than "finish."
Miysaki's lavish animated tale of a young girl's trip through the looking glass, kinds like Alice did, but far weirder.
probably my favorite Miyazaki film to date and second-favorite Ghibli film (Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies taking top honors). profound, thought-provoking, and still magically entertaining. the human characters are so brilliantly and earnestly flawed that the line between traditional pro and antagonists is blurred almost beyond recognition. a beautifully-animated fantasy epic with historical and mythological perspective, gripping adventure, honest moral conflict, a dark edge, lovably playful tree spirits, and just the faintest spark of romance. awesome.
One of the greatest anime of all time. A enchantingly wonderful tale with characters you want to know more about and a setting I can't get enough of. It's like Miyazaki turns dream worlds into animation.
It's been a while since I've seen this one but I do remember thinking it was well done. I don't think my younger kids would like it much but my son might.
Lots of tension and not bad graphics.. though the plot was a bit confusing at times.. i can say i enjoyed it :). Good pass time.
With PRINCESS MONONOKE, Miyazaki churned out a highly acclaimed masterpiece that became the highest grossing movie of Japan, until his later SPIRITED AWAY dethroned it. Darker and more violent than any of Miyazaki's other films, PRINCESS MONONOKE is a dramatic multi-layered story about an Emishi prince who tries to settle the brutal conflict between a clan of human outcasts and the vicious gods of the forest. Most animated movies tend to portray characters as either "heroes" or "villains", but MONONOKE eschews these kinds of stock roles in favor of telling a story in which practically all the characters are flawed figures trying to find their way in the world. I think this makes MONONOKE all the more mesmerizing as a film, combined with the spectacular animation (check out the Forest Spirit and Nightwalker sequences) and stirring music. Disney/Miramax may have made their share of marketing mistakes with this movie, but their translation job was not among them. Neil Gaiman's English script achieves the difficult task of remaining faithful to Miyazaki's screenplay while maintaining a natural, poetic flow in his dialogue. I've read all kinds of complaints about using big-name stars in animated feature films, but in the case of any of the Disney-Ghibli dubs I have to say that this approach has paid off rather well, and PRINCESS MONONOKE's voice cast is no exception. The actors assembled for the dub--including Billy Crudup, Minnie Driver, Gillian Anderson and especially Keith David--all provide good, solid vocal performances. Some folks have issues with Billy Bob Thornton and Claire Danes's voice acting here, but in my opinion, they both did great jobs too. It remains one of the best Anime dubs ever produced. Of course, hardcore fans will probably go for the Japanese language track, which is thankfully included on the DVD.
One of Miyazaki's best films. It is not only an amazing action/adventure/fantasy film, it also promotes morality and environmental awareness. Miyazaki transcends dimensions, and the 2-dimensional characters inhabiting his worlds are stunningly, remarkably human. This is his medium and he commands it with his truly masterful direction.
wicked awesome movie! I love the wolves... they make me laugh. I would never get bored watching this movie!
Shows that Japanese Animi is 10 times better than the crap that we sometime put out (no disrespect to Family Guy) :)
The bit of this movie that I got to see when a friend brought it over was fantastic! I'm looking forward to the day I get to watch the whole thing.
A MASTERPIECE!!
I cant say anything more than a masterpiece, great animation, the plot and the story itself its pure gold...
Just great...
Miyazaki makes a lot of films about environmental issues, but none of them have the same epic scope, poetic story, complex and mature relationships as this one. This is, in my opinion, the crown jewel in his entire filmography. San, Lady Eboshi, Ashitaka, and every other character in this film have complicated motivations for their actions and no one is entirely heroic or villainous. The animal gods are beautiful, but not the kid friendly anthropomorphic animals from Disney movies that we're used to. These things have fangs and hooves that will cause some serious damage if given the chance. The forest spirit and all of the transformations it undergoes are some of the most stunning and unique pieces of animation ever produced. Miyazaki and his films are proof that while computer generated animation is becoming the norm, hand-drawn animated films still have more power and imagination and magic and life left within them.

Absolutely Fantastic...
Hayao Miyazaki is a great animator, and this is a great film...
It tells an epic story set in medieval Japan, at the dawn of the Iron Age, when some men still lived in harmony with nature and others were trying to tame and defeat it. It is not a simplistic tale of good and evil, but the story of how humans, forest animals and nature gods all fight for their share of the new emerging order.
It is one of the most inventive and visually stunning animated films I have ever seen...
The artistry is simple but beautifully crafted...examples...
The writhing skin of the boar-monster and the great white wolves which are drawn with such grace...
Interesting, thoughtful & enjoyable but it does drag a wee bit to much during patches in the middle.
Probably worthy of quite a bit more than the rating i've given it - for the quality of its premise but the uneven pace & clean resolution of the character's situations rather undermined this.
Hayao Miyazaki truly is a living genius and one of the best film directors of all time. Miyazaki's greatest masterpiece!
This movie had little error. It was amazing wither you watch it in Japanese or English. The English voice cast was great and really worked the movie good. The movie was a piece of art and done really well. Probably one of Hayao Miyazaki's best films.
I wasn't interested in seeing this film, but against my better judgement I sat down to watch it and I was pleasently surprised. The storyline may be difficult for some to follow but the beauty of the animation and the excellent creation of the characters more than makes up for it. Definately one to see!
Undoubtedly, the best of Miyazaki's animated films. "Mononoke" is probably the best animated film to ever emerge from Japan.

A Very Spiritual Driven film that I def need to see again and again. Another Miyazaki film that will be a classic. When watching this I def did not expect what I saw. How truly original and visually stunning this turned out to be. I know some out there don't like Anime but I think his films are in a genre by themselves. Def see all of his films you won't be disappointed...
I LOVE THIS MOVIE>> AND THATS IT! ^^ WATCH IT! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Simply brilliant! A Miyazaki that cannot be missed! Minnie Driver is so good as the villian and claire danes as the heroine that it pops off the screen! It's majestic screen play have inspired shows such as Avatar: The Last Airbender. Studio Ghibli has out done itself!
