Halle Berry plays an investigative reporter that learns her friend's murder might be connected to a powerful ad executive. She goes undercover with the help of her associate as things begin to reveal how far people will go to protect the truth; not only from others, but from themselves.
What would happen if a late-night, D-grade direct-to-cable thriller excised all of the raunchily enjoyable elements and managed to attract an A-list cast? The result might be shockingly like Perfect Stranger, a movie so inane that it fails to rise to the level of "good trash." Like Hannibal Rising, this is one of those dumb thrillers where's it's tough to decide which element is worse: the direction, the editing, the acting, or the writing. There are times when a movie like Perfect Stranger can achieve the status of a "guilty pleasure" - assuming there's plenty of sex and nudity to go along with the purple prose and cheap twists. In this case, however, the lurid elements have been neutered, resulting in a production that's not much fun.
Both lead actors are clearly on hand to earn a paycheck. Bruce Willis is marking time waiting for his next opportunity to die hard. He gets to glare a lot and throw a guy around, but that's pretty much the sum total of his performance. Halle Berry mails it in. She looks great but plays such a bitch that it's easy to stop caring about her ten minutes into the film. (This is not, I'm sure, what director James Foley was aiming for.) Those hoping for a Swordfish moment will be disappointed. Berry keeps everything under wraps or below the camera line. Too bad, because that might have provided a reason for at least a few people to see Perfect Stranger.
Rowena (Berry) is an investigative reporter who is searching for the killer of her childhood friend, Grace (Nicki Aycox). At the time of her demise, Grace was having an affair with married advertising magnate Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis). A computer account is full of incriminating sexy chat transcripts between Grace and "ADEX." But is ADEX Harrison? This is something Rowena must determine with the help of her sidekick, Miles (Giovanni Ribisi). To do so, she attacks on two fronts - logging on and sending suggestive messages to ADEX and joining Harrison's company as a gofer. Meanwhile, she's having hot sex with her boyfriend, Cameron (Gary Dourdan), while Miles looks on jealously.
The ending of Perfect Stranger is a surprise because it's arbitrary. This is often the case with D-grade thrillers but one expects more from a major multiplex release starring Bruce Willis and Halle Berry. Based on the clues provided in the story, there's no way to predict where it's going to end up. In fact, the movie demands about five minutes worth of exposition to tie up all the loose ends and attempt to convince us that the identity of the killer makes sense.
Without a doubt, Perfect Stranger is trying to appeal to the same demographic that salivated through the trashy amusement that was Basic Instinct. But without Berry spreading her legs, it lacks a certain panache. For the most part, Foley forgets that thrillers are primarily about atmosphere and tension. There's little of either to be found here. The movie plays a little with the world of on-line sex chats and how it's easy to fake an identity, but this ends up being a red herring. In the end, the chats and their content mean nothing.
It's easy to appreciate an exploitative movie when it provides the requisite exploitation. However, when it strips away all of the stuff that gets it relegated to Cinemax late nights, it becomes dull and uninspired. The plot's attempts to twist our expectations and come up with something we don't expect smack of desperation. Those who don't pay close enough attention to care whether the story makes sense may be satisfied because there's a surprise. Anyone concerned about logic, coherence, and any kind of quality will watch with a jaw slackened by disbelief. Perfect Stranger is the kind of movie that makes you want to rush home and watch something by Hitchcock to be reminded that the term "thriller" does not have to be synonymous with "addlepated."
Here was a weird flick. While it isn't the best movie that you'll ever see, you have to watch it and hear Bruce talk dirty to Halle Berry =)
this was actually a really good movie, I was surprised but the cast is amaxing and there are great twists.
Was great! the bad guy is someone I usually trust implicitly. This is a great movie, but its kinda predictable.
YO besides the fact that giovanni was a stalker/sex addict in this movie, he was pretty sexi omg!!!! haley was phenominally stunning as usual and the twist at the end was sooo crazy!Flixster - Share Movies
bruce willis playing one of his "smug" roles and halle berry running around with her best "gothika" impressions stapled on her face, no matter how intelligent or witty this film may be the bad acting in the few moments i saw was enough for me to pass.
Pretty good flick, was a bit obvious that there was going to be a twist as the first destination wasn't quite cemented...left you knowing that it wasn't quite over yet so the ending wasn't a big surprise. Nonetheless it was enjoyable to watch and a decent commentary on just how well you really (don't) know the people (secrets) that surround you every day.
I really liked this story. I wish the casting was better because it would have made for a much better movie
I loved this movie. This defintley isnt bruce willis best movie, but he was prety good in this. Halle Berry...daaaaaaaammmmnnnnn. She was more than great in this movie. She was awesome. I loved her role in that movie. She was really good. Giovanni Ribsi was also a great actor in this film. He couldnt hav gotten better in his acting than it was in this film. After watching this film i found out that my favorite type of movies is definetly psylogical thrillers. Who doesnt?
Surprised at some of the reviews I have seen for this? I thought this was a very good thriller with a very good twist, for once that you can't see coming right from the start of the film. Maybe it's a bit slow to start with but has one of the best endings for a thriller I've seen in recent years! Go check it out!!
I was very disappointed with this. I thought that it was going to be an original thriller with a great cast and a fun story. I was wrong with everything except the great cast. Some scenes were suspenseful and well-made, but the ending was incredibly stupid, and the movie overall came off mediocre.
Don't watch this movie, it's just alright but it's not worth watching. The twist isn't surprising but the bad cinematography is. Sure Willis does an alright job acting but this movie seriously shouldn't have been made.
ok it was a stalker movie ok i know but man some things like WTF man some people are really sick! i'm giving this i say it's a bad review but because of the dialouge and that Halle Berry sux!
Well I thought this was honestly goin to suck ass, but this time Critics were wrong. There was nothing better to watch on T.V so i said what the hell. This is actually a pretty good thriller. Sure its not perfect and some silly things, but I enjoyed and was surprised at the end. Better than expected.
Fogettable... the ending wasn't predictable but it went against what had happened for the rest of the film... A few enjoyable aspects and Halle Berry was okay but certainly not a film you want to watch more than once!
Parts of it get a little boring, but there are some good twists. Would probably be better on second viewing.
Was okay, the storyline was a little bit confusing and not properly done but had alot of potentiol- just not really the outcome
This is one of those films that you'll watch & think, "Hmmmm, that was okay" and then, a week later, you can't remember the plot. Average, formulaic, and predictable.
Good movie, I especially liked the twist at the end. This film keeps you guessing, you keep wondering who the killer might actually is from the clues provided and I'll bet most people are led the wrong way when twist after twist occurs. Halle Berry is of course a good actress, she stole the whole show, there basically was nothing to say about Bruce Willis, I keep thinking his role could be played by a least famous actor.
awesome. I loved it all the way. i'm glad I got to see it finally. Thankx starz. also, the song at the end was beautiful, damn giovanni, why'd it have to happen like that.
cool movie. halle berry is such a bad ass. the movie is very interesting especially when u realise who the killer actually is.
An incredible twist of a person who has learned to regain the control that has been repeatedly taken from her.
Giovvanniiiiiii Ribisi, I love you! Halle Berry sucks ass. This movie is really quite terrible, do not waste your time.

i didnt understand any of it. the only reason to get me to keep watching it is cause of bruce willis! i love him!
