A great first half with an interesting conspiracy set-up, but declines into a series of long and slightly tedious baddies-chase-the-good-guys scenes towards the end.

James Brolin heads a team of astronauts who're pulled from their capsule seconds before the launch and told they must help fake a Mars landing in order to save the space program. Meanwhile Elliot Gould is a reporter whose friend that works in the Houston command centre tells him of a discrepancy in the telemetry. This friend promptly vanishes and he finds someone else living in his apartment, so he sets about discovering the truth. This hugely entertaining conspiracy theory thriller from Peter Hyams delivers an interesting premise told with boy's own panache. Elliot Gould does what he does best as the smart mouthed reporter and gets all the best lines in some witty quickfire banter with his editor and love interest, and the action is provided in the astronaut's escape from the NASA compound. Hyams makes great use of the desert locations and there's an exciting finale in the form of an aerial chase through it's canyons between two black ops helicopters (cleverly given a kind of faceless, malevolent personality through formation flying) and a barnstorming crop duster played by Telly "Kojak" Savalas. Occasionally a little far fetched, but it's funny, intriguing and exciting, and great fun.

enjoyable enough paranoid 70s thriller. but what is the point of that horrendous slow-mo shot at the very end?

I saw this years ago and recently bought it. Very good movie but it shows it's age. If this were to be redone today with a better script, I think it'd do well. Great story. Fortunately O.J. has limited lines in this. Would have been ironic if he had been given the knife. You have to see this to know.

If you watch this movie as a movie it's very entertaining. But if you like because it makes you think the goverment faked the moon landing your really just a big moron.

Can you imagine? In this day and age of propaganda and media lapdogs it suddenly doesn't seem so far fetched...

Interesting, but not altogether very entertaining, conspiracy thriller which is too slow and dull to be truly thrilling. A shame, because the premise has potential.

A fantastic story that is sometimes overlooked due to it's frequent showings on tv. It's really a conspiracy film, that apes the opinions of those who still don't believe that moon reached the moon. I believe they did, but this film is a good way to show how it could have been faked.

The acting is amazing, and the whole film is truly glorious in every single way. An absolute five-star rated film that everyone would enjoy.

It hit home with its conspiracy theories back in the day but now only the hardcore theorists even slightly care.

Yeah I get it, we faked the Apollo moon landings so there must be this grand conspiracy. Blah blah blah.

this film IS a sci-fi; it is about the firs manned mission to Mars. but it quickly turns into a 70s dectective action adventure with Elliot Gould. if Sci-Fi is not your thing, don't be put off watching this film. aside from the closing shot it is superbe.

Engaging conspiracy film. Capricorn One concerns a US cover-up of a mission to Mars, attempting to claim the astonauts' journey resulted in a accident costing them their lives. Regretting their decision to lie for 'the sake of the nation', the actor/astronauts try to escape the government's clutches by trekking home through the desert. A reporter meanwhile, suspects something is afoot and makes an investigation, one that nearly gets him killed on several occaisions. An intruiging and entertaining thriller, Capricorn One is bolstered by fine work from Gould and soem dazzling camerwork, most notably the crane shot illustrating the astronauts parting ways and the POV shots when Gould's car develops a mind of it's own. Unfortunately, the second half of the film descends into typical adventure territory, with a daft dogfight, and a silly deus ex machina involving a snake. These factors stretch the believablity of the film, and of course affect its prescience (recent investigation into disproving the 1969 moon landing).

James Brolin as a young man. How funny is that both Streisands' husbands are in the same movie. Interesting.

One of the all-time great thrillers. Consiracy fans will love this deeply paranoid film. Peter Hyam's best with an impressive Jerry Goldsmith score!

FRIKKIN CLASSIC SF flick rife with mystery, coverups, underhanded political dealings, and desperation. This is a great thriller with stupendous acting that brings it all to a boiling point. If you like SF and you haven't seen it, you are missing out!
